Susan Ward

Colorado potter, Susan Etter Ward was born in Monroe, Wisconsin and grew up in Maryland.  After graduating from Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts and moving to Boulder, Colorado, she completed a master's degree in special education while working as an occupational therapist at Denver Children's Hospital.  Her interest in ceramics began when she took classes in pottery through the Boulder recreation department, studying with Betty Woodman and Larry Clark before becoming a member of the Boulder Potters' Guild.  She remained in the Guild for over 25 years until setting up her own studio in Estes Park, Colorado where she currently lives with her husband, landscape photographer John Ward.  Her work is primarily functional stoneware, gas-fired in reduction to cone 10, and is often characterized by intricate piercing, incising and carving in geometric patterns.  When not spattered with clay, Susan Ward is an avid birder with a strong interest in all aspects of natural history as well as in classical music and opera.
