MARCH WORKSHOP FEATURING BRUCE PEIL 3-DAYS Our Guest Artist, Bruce Peil for the month of March, will lead our March Workshop. We are thrilled to have Bruce agree to be with us to lead what we are sure will be a fantastic experience for all those who are able to attend. This workshop is about understanding that a painting is made up of interlocking shapes of color and value that are all relative to each other. Emphasis will be put on seeing the correct values, painting natural feeling colors with simple shapes, and getting accurate information down quickly on location. The object is to have each piece of color be correct in relation to the one that came before. “One problem I see students having is painting a scene that is too large outdoors for their ability to finish before the light changes. So, if we go on location, each student should be prepared to paint as small as necessary in order to capture the scene before the light changes”. The first day will be spent in the studio talking about Bruce’s approach to painting, and doing some preliminary value studies. The remainder of the workshop will be spent doing small quick studies to learn to get an accurate start and to capture “that moment in time”. An inaccurate start always leads to a failed painting. Bring photos to work from when painting indoors. Demos will be done when necessary, and each student will receive personal attention. Each time a new subject is approached, it will be in a different situation, and should be treated with a fresh outlook and not a repeated formula. In other words, “we should paint what we see, not what we think we know”. Other topics discussed will be composition, contrast, edges, planes, perspective, and simplifying equipment. Bring paintings for Bruce to critique if you like. Below is a list of the paints Bruce likes to use. If you like, bring the colors you are used to using. You don’t have to use the same palette as Bruce, but he will be talking about why a simplified palette like his will work to your advantage. Hours for the workshop will be from 10:00 A.M. to 3:30 P.M. The dates will be from March 7th - 9th. The cost will be $225 and lunch will be provided. The first 12 that sign up will reserve their spot to paint with Bruce. After that, we will begin a waiting list as to ensure individual attention, we will limit the workshop to 12 students. The final day to sign up for the class will be March 5th, 2012. Please call Clay Speer at 405-830-2057 to sign up or you may email us at grapevinegalleryokc@yahoo.com .
