Copper from Santa Clara del Cobre, Michoacan, Mexico

This small village is the first place where copper was discovered and crafted in the western hemisphere.  The metal was first used for weapons, and, try as they might to conquer this rich source of power; the Aztecs never won the treasure of the Tarascans.  The craft of making copper arts has changed in these centuries, but nothing can replace the beauty and veracity of the hand crafted work of just a few artists. 

As in the past, the copper is melted by charcoal, it is formed by handmade tools, and represents both traditional and innovative forms.  More and more of the work we receive is signed by the one who made, but it is difficult for the makers to understand why no one recognizes the style of each artist.  Over time, anyone can learn to recognize the style of a particular artist.

The copper is first melted and then poured into a depression in the dirt floor of the workshop (taller in Spanish).  The artist cuts or selects or saws a piece that is large enough for the work he plans to create.  After being heated, copper remains malleable until it is hammered.  This allows these artists to shape and hammer the form they seek through the use of multi-shaped handmade steel anvil both sharp and flat.  As they shape, they heat and temper the work.  The tempering is important, because it is what determines the patina of the final piece which is a result of the heat and the type of copper used in the process.  Engraving and patterns of hammering constitute the final decoration of the individual work.
